Flame detectors, unlike smoke and heat detectors, do not rely on convection to transport the fire products to the detector nor do they rely on a ceiling to trap the products. They can, therefore, be used to protect large open areas without sacrificing speed of response to flaming fires. To ensure full coverage flame detectors do require direct line of sight to all parts of the protected area.

The MS502EX infra-red flame detectors are designed to respond rapidly to fires which involve clean-burning fuels such as alcohol or methane. Fires which would not be detected by smoke detectors. The flame detectors by virtue of its operating wavelength and flicker discrimination are insensitive to normal environmental influences.
